Dentistry

As our pets age, they inevitably develop dental tartar, which traps bacteria around the teeth and gums.  The problems associated with dental disease can lead to foul smelling breath, excessive drooling, difficultly eating, loose or decaying teeth, and even the spread of infection to internal organs.  We highly recommend early prophylactic dental cleaning as a way of preventing and correcting these problems.  While your pet is anesthetized, a more thorough oral exam is performed.  Digital dental X-rays are taken to help detect problems under the gumline that might otherwise be missed.  During a routine dental cleaning, caked-on dental tartar is manually removed and the teeth are ultrasonically scaled above and below the gum-line.  The teeth are polished, and Oravet temporary sealant is applied.  Certain teeth may need to be extracted in order to reduce or eliminate the associated pain and infection.   Special tooth-cleaning products, treats, and prescription dental diets are also available for at-home dental care

We are now offering PennHip radiographs  (X-rays) for early diagnosis of canine hip dysplasia. Dogs as young as 4 months of age can be screened, and when needed, early interventions can be instituted to lessen the effects of degenerative joint disease (arthritis) that results from having dysplastic hips. This is also an important hip screening test for potential breeding animals.  Call us for more information or to schedule your dog's screening.
